I. Overview Of Standards 
JIS G3466 is a Japanese industry standard specification for square and rectangular steel pipes produced by cold-formed welding or seamless processes. Cold-formed square and rectangular welded steel tubes for general structure.


Scope of application: Mainly used in building structure (such as steel structure frame, bridge, curtain wall support), machinery manufacturing (automobile parts, equipment skeleton), agricultural facilities (greenhouses, agricultural vehicles), traffic engineering (railway guardrail, container skeleton), etc. 
The latest version: JIS G3466-2021, which specifies the technical requirements of steel pipes in civil and building steel structures.

 

II.Material And Performance 
1. Commonly used materials 
• Carbon steel: Q235, Q215, SS400, etc., to meet the general structural strength requirements. 
• Low alloy steels: Q345 (16Mn), Q390, etc., for scenarios requiring higher strength or weather resistance. 
• Other materials: Some scenes use stainless steel (such as JIS G3459).

 

2. Performance characteristics 
• Dimensional accuracy: strictly specify the dimensional tolerance of the section (such as side length, wall thickness tolerance within ±10%) to ensure the fitting of the assembly. 
• Welding performance: The weld must pass non-destructive testing (such as ultrasonic inspection) to ensure that there are no cracks, pores and other defects. 
• Mechanical properties: tensile strength ≥370 MPa, yield strength ≥235 MPa (Q235 as an example), suitable for load-bearing structures.

 

III.Production Process 
1. Cold forming and welding 
• Process steps: Strip steel is unpacked, flat, crimped into a round tube, rolled into a square/rectangular tube, and finally high frequency resistance welding (ERW) or arc welding. 
Type of weld: straight seam weld (more common) or spiral weld.

 

2. Seamless process 
• Seamless rectangular tubes are produced by hot rolling or cold drawing processes for high pressure, high precision applications (such as mechanical hydraulic systems).

 

3. Surface treatment 
• Optional galvanizing (hot plating or electroplating), oiling, pickling, etc., improve corrosion resistance.
