    Production Process

    1.Raw material selection

High-quality steel strips or coils are chosen based on the required chemical composition and mechanical properties.  These raw materials should meet the standard's requirements for elements such as carbon, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, and aluminum.

    2.  Cold forming

The steel strips or coils are cold-formed into the desired hollow section shapes (circular, square, or rectangular) through roll forming machines.  This process gives the tubes their initial shape while maintaining the material's strength and ductility.

    3. Welding

Electric resistance welding (ERW) is commonly used to join the edges of the formed steel strips.  This welding method ensures a strong and high-quality weld seam without the need for additional filler materials.  The welded tubes are then passed through a series of shaping rolls to achieve the final shape and size .

    4. Quality control

Various tests and inspections are carried out to ensure that the tubes meet the AS1163 standard requirements.  These include dimensional checks, surface quality inspection, mechanical property tests (such as tensile test, impact test, and flattening test), and non-destructive testing (like ultrasonic testing or radiographic testing) for the weld seam .

    Applications

    Construction

They are commonly used as structural components in buildings, such as columns, beams, and support systems.  The high strength-to-weight ratio of AS1163 tubes allows for the construction of tall and large-span structures while reducing the overall weight of the building.  For example, in the construction of high-rise buildings, these tubes can effectively resist lateral loads and minimize deflection.  A notable case is the Sydney Opera House, where AS1163 tubes were used in the structural framework system to build complex curved shapes while ensuring the required strength and stability to support the concrete shell and other loads .

    Infrastructure projects

AS1163 tubes are essential for the construction of bridges, overpasses, and pedestrian walkways.  They are used to build trusses, beams, and support structures that ensure the safe and stable transmission of loads over large spans.  The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a typical example, with its main arch span supported by two huge steel arches composed of a series of interconnected AS1163 tubes.  These tubes have withstood the test of time since the bridge was completed in 1932.

    Industrial facilities

In the industrial field, AS1163 tubes are used for various structures such as support frames, platforms, and equipment frames.  They have the strength and rigidity required to withstand heavy loads and harsh environmental conditions often encountered in industrial settings.  For instance, in the construction of offshore oil and gas platforms, AS1163 tubes are used to build the platform's structural framework, providing the strength and durability needed to withstand extreme environmental conditions like strong winds, waves, and corrosive saltwater, while also supporting the weight of the platform's equipment and personnel .

    Architectural design

Besides their structural functions, AS1163 tubes are also used in architectural elements to enhance the aesthetics of buildings and structures.  They can be used to construct exterior walls, canopies, and decorative structures, providing design flexibility and an industrial-chic aesthetic.  The bending, curving, and welding capabilities of AS1163 tubes allow architects and designers to create unique and eye-catching architectural features.

An example is Melbourne's Federation Square, which features a striking deconstructivist style design with dynamic shapes and forms.  AS1163 tubes were extensively used in the construction of canopies, facades, and structural elements, enabling the architects to achieve their bold and unconventional vision while maintaining the necessary structural integrity .
