API 5L X70 PSL2 steel pipe is a type of high-strength steel pipe widely used in the field of oil and gas transportation pipelines.

In-depth Understanding of PSL2 Level

 

PSL (Product Specification Level) is a key concept in the API 5L standard, used to differentiate different quality grades. PSL2 is much more stringent than PSL1, mainly manifested in the following aspects:


• More stringent control of chemical components:

PSL2 imposes stricter upper limits on the contents of elements such as carbon, sulfur, and phosphorus, in order to enhance the weldability and corrosion resistance.


• Higher toughness requirements:

PSL2 mandates the conduct of the Schaeffer V-notch impact test to ensure that the steel pipe can resist brittle fracture under low temperatures or impact conditions, while PSL1 does not have such a requirement.


• Comprehensive non-destructive testing:

PSL2 mandates that a full non-destructive inspection of the entire pipe body (such as ultrasonic or radiographic testing) be conducted for each steel pipe to detect extremely subtle internal defects.

 

Sizing and Application Suggestions

 

When selecting and applying API 5L X70 PSL2 steel pipes in actual projects, there are several key points that require special attention:


• Pay attention to additional requirements:

For steel pipes used in acidic environments containing hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), it is necessary to ensure that they meet the additional requirements for resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) and/or resistance to sulfide stress cracking (SSC), as specified in standards such as NACE MR0175/ISO 15156.


• Confirm the delivery status:

The performance of steel pipes is closely related to their heat treatment state (delivery status). The common delivery states of X70 PSL2 include "Q" (quenching + tempering) or "M" (thermomechanical controlled rolling). Pipes in the "Q" state (quenching and tempering treatment) typically have better comprehensive mechanical properties, especially toughness and weldability.


• Pay attention to on-site welding:

The X70 steel has high strength, and the on-site circumferential welding requires strict process control. Key measures include: preheating above 100°C to prevent cracks; using low-hydrogen welding materials (such as E6010 electrode for root welding); and strict welding worker training and process assessment.
