The main application areas 
JIS G3466 standard steel pipe because of its good mechanical properties (strength, toughness) and easy processing, widely used in the following fields:

1. Architecture and Civil Engineering 
• Building frame: used for beams, columns, trusses and other load-bearing components of steel structure buildings. 
• Curtain wall support: skeleton structure used as glass curtain wall or metal curtain wall. 
• Bridge auxiliary structure: such as bridge floor support, temporary construction supports, etc.

 

2. Mechanical manufacturing 
• Equipment frame: support frame for industrial machinery, automated production lines, machine tools. 
• Conveying system: conveyor bracket, logistics storage shelf structure.

 

3. Infrastructure and public facilities 
Fences/guardrail: protective structures for highways, airports, stadiums. 
• Light pole/signal pole: the base material for street lights and traffic signal lamp support poles.

 

4. New energy and special uses 
• Solar support: the support structure of the photovoltaic power generation system (with anti-corrosion treatment).

Processing

 

Typical processing 
JIS G3466 steel pipe manufacturing needs to follow a standardized process, the core steps include:

1. Prepare raw materials 
• Steel coil selection: Carbon steel coil conforming to JIS G3131 (hot rolled low carbon steel sheet) or similar standards. 
• Uncoiling and leveling: the steel coil is unrolled and the internal stress is eliminated by the leveler to ensure the flat sheet.

 

2. Molding process 
• Cold forming: The steel plate is gradually bent into a square or rectangular tube blank through a continuous roller press unit. 
• High frequency welding (HFW) : high frequency current is used to heat the edge of the tube blank, and pressure welding is formed to form a closed section (welding seams must meet the requirements of JIS standards).

 

3. Finishing and post-treatment 
• Sizing and straightening: Adjust the dimensional accuracy of the pipe through the mold to eliminate bending deformation. 
• Cutting: Flying saw or laser cutting according to customer's required length. 
• Surface treatment: 
◦ Pickling/sandblasting: removal of oxide and welding residue. 
◦ Galvanizing/coating: Improved corrosion resistance (optional process, subject to JIS H8641 and other standards).

 

4. Quality inspection 
• Mechanical properties test: sampling test tensile strength (≥270 MPa), yield strength, elongation, etc. 
Weld inspection: Eddy current inspection (ECT) or ultrasonic inspection (UT) to ensure that the weld is free of defects. 
• Dimensional tolerance verification: Check whether the section size, wall thickness and straightness meet the requirements of JIS G3466.

Processing Precautions

 

1. Welding process control: To avoid material embrittlement caused by overheating, matching welding materials and parameters should be used. 
2. Cold forming accuracy: the wear of the forming roll needs to be calibrated regularly to prevent cross-section deformation. 
3. Anti-corrosion requirements: If used in outdoor or high humidity environment, it is necessary to increase the thickness of the galvanized layer or coat the anti-corrosion coating.

• Difference from JIS G3444 (round tube) : JIS G3466 is designed for square/rectangular tubes, with more emphasis on section stiffness and connection convenience. 
International standards: Similar standards include EN 10219 (Cold formed welded structural pipe in Europe) and ASTM A500 (carbon steel pipe for structural use in the United States).
