Carbon (C) :
Carbon is the main element that affects the strength and hardness of steel.
Manganese (Mn) :
Manganese is an important element for improving the strength and hardness of steel, while also helping to eliminate the adverse effects of sulfur.
Phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) :
Phosphorus and sulfur are harmful elements in steel, which reduce the plasticity and toughness of steel.

API 5L
The API 5L Pipeline Steel Pipe standard specification was developed by the American Petroleum Institute (API), which specifies two product classes: API 5L PSL1 and API 5L PSL2, which have clear differences in mechanical properties:
1. Yield and tensile strength:
- PSL1: For different steel grades, there are clear minimum requirements for the yield strength and tensile strength of PSL1, but there is no maximum limit. For example, the yield strength of A25 steel grade is 172 MPa and the tensile strength is 310 MPa; The yield strength of the X70 steel grade is 483 MPa and the tensile strength is 565 MPa.
- PSL2: The yield strength and tensile strength of PSL2 have maximum limits in addition to minimum requirements. For example, the yield strength range of grade B steel is 290-496 MPa, and the tensile strength range is 414-758 MPa; The yield strength range of the X70 steel grade is 552-690 MPa and the tensile strength range is 621-827 MPa.
2. Impact test:
- PSL1: The impact performance test is not required.
- PSL2: For all steel grades except X80, the average Akv value of the full size 0 ° C: longitudinal ≥41J, transverse ≥27J. X80 steel grade, full size 0℃ Akv average: longitudinal ≥101J, horizontal ≥68J.
3. Non-destructive testing:
- PSL1: Non-destructive test by branch is not required.
- PSL2: Non-destructive inspection, such as ultrasonic and X-ray inspection, should be carried out one by one to ensure the safety and integrity of the pipeline.
4. Hydraulic test:
- PSL1: Water pressure test is not mandatory.
- PSL2: Hydraulic tests need to be carried out one by one, and non-destructive testing cannot be used to replace hydraulic testing.
5. Carbon Equivalent (CEV) limits:
- PSL2: Limits the carbon equivalent content, where the carbon mass fraction is greater than 0.12%, equal to or less than 0.12%. Different CEQ's should be used. For PSL2 pipe lines, there is a maximum limited tensile strength
