Production Process

1.Raw material selection

 High-quality steel strips or coils are chosen based on the required chemical composition and mechanical properties.  These raw materials should meet the standard's requirements for elements such as carbon, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, and aluminum.

 

2.  Cold forming

The steel strips or coils are cold-formed into the desired hollow section shapes (circular, square, or rectangular) through roll forming machines.  This process gives the tubes their initial shape while maintaining the material's strength and ductility.

 

3. Welding

Electric resistance welding (ERW) is commonly used to join the edges of the formed steel strips.  This welding method ensures a strong and high-quality weld seam without the need for additional filler materials.  The welded tubes are then passed through a series of shaping rolls to achieve the final shape and size .

 

4. Quality control

 Various tests and inspections are carried out to ensure that the tubes meet the AS1163 standard requirements.  These include dimensional checks, surface quality inspection, mechanical property tests (such as tensile test, impact test, and flattening test), and non-destructive testing (like ultrasonic testing or radiographic testing) for the weld seam .

They are commonly used as structural components in buildings, such as columns, beams, and support systems.  The high strength-to-weight ratio of AS1163 tubes allows for the construction of tall and large-span structures while reducing the overall weight of the building.  For example, in the construction of high-rise buildings, these tubes can effectively resist lateral loads and minimize deflection.  A notable case is the Sydney Opera House, where AS1163 tubes were used in the structural framework system to build complex curved shapes while ensuring the required strength and stability to support the concrete shell and other loads .
