The Purpose And Function Of Heat Treatment
Why is heat treatment necessary for steel pipes?
Heat treatment is a process that alters the internal microstructure of steel pipes by controlling their heating, holding at temperature and cooling, thereby achieving the desired properties. It does not change the shape of the steel pipe, but rather its internal quality.
The main purposes and functions are as follows:
Improving mechanical properties (core function) :
- Strength and hardness: Through processes such as quenching and tempering (quenching and tempering treatment), the strength, hardness and wear resistance of steel pipes are significantly enhanced, enabling them to withstand higher pressure and wear.
- Plasticity and toughness: Through processes such as annealing, internal stress is eliminated to enhance the plasticity and toughness of steel pipes, making them less prone to brittle fracture during processing (such as bending and flaring) and use.
Eliminate internal stress
Residual stress will be generated inside steel pipes during the processes of rolling, forging, welding or cold working (such as cold drawing and cold rolling). These stresses can cause steel pipes to deform or crack during subsequent processing or use, and even affect their resistance to stress corrosion. Through stress relief annealing, most internal stresses can be eliminated and dimensions stabilized.

Improve processing performance
- Improving machinability: Through annealing or normalizing, the hardness is made moderate and the structure uniform, facilitating mechanical processing such as turning and drilling, achieving a smooth machined surface, and extending the tool life.
- Preparing for cold working: Through softening annealing, hardness is reduced and plasticity is enhanced, creating conditions for subsequent deformation processing such as cold drawing and cold bending.
Uniform chemical composition and structure
After hot rolling, the chemical composition and structure of the steel pipe may have segregation or unevenness. Through diffusion annealing (homogenizing annealing) and normalizing, the composition and structure can be homogenized, and the consistency of performance can be improved.
Obtain specific physical or chemical properties:
For stainless steel pipes, through solution treatment, carbides are dissolved to obtain a single austenitic structure, thereby achieving the best corrosion resistance.
In summary, heat treatment is the crucial step that endows steel pipes with a "soul", determining whether they can ultimately meet the design requirements for strength, toughness, corrosion resistance and processing performance.
